Cheryl Kolander, the Senior Master Natural Dyer who IS Aurora Silk dyes all her beautiful 120 named and numbered 100% Naturally dyed colours in her small studio in Portland, Oregon, where she has lived for 25 years.
Production is all by hand. These Artisan colours are thus extremely precious and rare. They are true "Textile jewels".
Cheryl's great knowledge and skill that allow production of these colours on a regular and repeatable basis. On fabric, colours can be Artisan hand dyed in up to 10 yard dyelots. Larger orders are done sequentially so that dye-lot variation is minimal. However, because this is all hand work, dyelots can vary.
Abrajz or variegation within a colour is characteristic of hand work. Unless asked to do a colour variegated, Cheryl's effort is always to make colours as even as possible. Most colours show only the subtilist of variegations, a characteristic that adds depth and life to the colour.
Please allow at least 4 weeks for the production of your Artisan hand dyed Natural dyed colour.
Hand Natural Dye Artisan colours cost between $40 and $60 per yard, and are all pre-shrunk, pre-washed, ready to use. Small orders may be folded, large orders are sent rolled, ready to cut.
Unless noted, all colours are washable.
ESPECIALLY FOR DESIGNERS:
In addition to her hand dye work, Cheryl can formulate custom Natural Dyed colous for fabric that can be dyed on Appropriate Technology machinery at partner dyeworks, either in the US or abroad. Minimum orders (approximately 30 to 50 yards) apply. Not all colours can be formulated for this machine assist work. For those that can be, dyelots are larger than with hand work, and the colours tend to be very even.
Please allow at least 8 weeksfor the development and production of your machine-assisted Naturally dyed colour(s).
Costs vary by colour; ball–park estimate is $30 to $40 per yard for a 30 yard length, depending on fabric and colour. Please email or call Cheryl about your colour needs. Cheryl holds "office hours" every Tuesday 1-4 PM Pacific time: 503-286-4149, and is frequently in the office on Fridays as well.

Cheryl plans to continue stocking her 120 naturally hand dyed colors on several yarns & threadsincluding the Lustre cord and the Fine 2-ply spun silks. She is also increasing the number of naturally dyed fabrics that can be sold by the yard on this website, including the new category "ON HAND COLOURS", which are available either by the yard or by the piece, usually 5 yards. (See indiviual fabrics for availability: Eri, Charmeuse, Ahimsa, Ahimsa Pebble, Light and Bright Tussah, and Window Pane Khadi cotton are some of the fabrics that typically have "ON HAND" COLOURS - on hand!)
THREAD SOON: the Ahimsa Peace silk thread will soon be available in colours to match the fabric colours most ordered: Indigo, black, charcoal, etc. Currently in experimental stage, available only in small skeins, but the plan is to put this out eventually on spools for machine sewing!
