Ahimsa™ Pebble Weave Silk Fabric

Ahimsa Pebble Weave

This fabric's warp and weft are both smooth spun Ahimsa™ Peace silk. "Peace" silk, also called vegetarian silk, is from cocoons from which the moth has completed its transformation and emerges free and happy. For more information, read Cheryl's "About Peace Silk" article.

Staple is approximately 2" and the yarns are two-ply for a soft, sparkly luster; drapey hand; and excellent durability.

The weave is called “Pebble” because of the pebbly surface texture.  It is a softer fabric with excellent drape, along with the delightful surface texture. Fabric thickens (and shrinks) on washing, becomes like a very soft suede.

Indigo blue pebble weave by Lindsey PelliculaThese dresses of Ahimsa Pebble Weave, in Aurora Silk Artisan Naturally dyed colours were created by Lindsey Pellicula, a US designer, shown at the Miami eco fashion event and invited to Paris for the next Sustainable Fashion Show. The yarn from which this fabric is woven is also available, as it is excellent for machine embroidery: Ahimsa (TM) Peace silk yarn. Recommended for machine sewing this fabric is our Ahimsa (TM) Peace silk thread, on cones.

Our current lot is a shinier satin with a looser weave.  Care must be taken in sewing and this fabric is recommended for drape garments.

Cheryl Kolander, who IS Aurora Silk has been promoting the idea of PEACE silk since her 1985 article published in Fiberarts Magazine. PEACE silk means silk that is raised in a totally PEACEFUL manner. "For me this means "Organically", of course, and with respect and Love. Then the moth must naturally emerge, be allowed to mate, lay her eggs and die happy." -Cheryl

Cheryl Kolander visited the production site in India in November 2006, and we are happy to report that all aspects of the operation are clean, healthy and honorable - absolutely no child labour or slavery (!); cocoons are raised in small family farms without the use of pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, genetic engineering or any other practice of disrepute. The Ahimsa(TM) label for Bombyx mori Peace silk is patented to our partner-producer in India. We are the sole US distributor for this fabric.
