Naturally Hand Dyed
This exceptional silk yarn is being custom spun for us in India, of Indian cultivated silk fibre (the same fibre we are now offering for hand-spinning). A yarn of this thickness is now very rare, as all the European mills have switched to newer machinery that only spins fine yarns. It has been years since something like this was available, it is a real feat and treasure to be able to offer this.
The hand of this yarn is unbelievably dreamy soft. The luster is excellent: very silky without being harsh and glassy like reeled silk can sometimes be. It is very easy to handle and knits rapidly at approximately 3 stitches to the inch, with 3 to 4 rows to the inch. We tested needles ranging from size 8 to size 11, and got similar results, with the larger needles yielding fewer rows. In these tests, we got approximately 40 square inches of knit per ounce, equal to about 150 square inches per skein, or a rectangle roughly 10 inches by 15 inches, or a neck scarf 5 inches by 30 inches. Thus, an estimate for a tank top or vest would be 4 or 5 skeins, a sweater (depending on size) 5 to 8 skeins (equals two, pound packs).
