ERI “PEACE” silk scarves with stitch-resist design

Spun and woven from wild Eri silk cocoons.  Eri is a type of wild silk found in India.  The cocoons are small and the silk is very light in colour, almost as white as bombyx (cultivated) silk.  The cocoons are gathered after the moth emerges, which makes this Eri silk “Peace” silk.  (The moths are allowed to emerge, mate, lay eggs and die happy.)  The fibre is processed, spun and the fabric woven in small villages.  Soft, and smoothly woven from fine two-ply yarns both warp and weft, and in a balanced weave for maximum durability.  Our Eri is exceptional in the fineness of the weave.

Naturally Hand Dyed at the Aurora Silk certified 100% Natural dyeworks in Portland, Oregon.  Natural Dyework is certified by Tyria, the International Guild of Professional Natural Dyers.  The Eri silk is certified by Mama D.O.C. Inc, US registered non-profit devoted to natural health.

These scarves are dyed with:  Logwood, a tropical tree-dye from the Carribean island of the Dominican Republic, a product of the Logwood Project; or with Indigo, the ancient natural dye derived from the Indigofera legume plant, which we naturally ferment in the ancient method of Europe, using only bran, madder and washing soda; or with Cochineal, a domesticated scale insect dye from Central America; or with Madder, a root dye for red.

The art work is done by the ancient stitch-resist technique and is an original design by the artist, Crystal Frey.  She is a talented, artistic woman with terminal cancer.  This is a special way for her to express herself positively and share her love with the world she knows she will soon be leaving.  Every scarf purchased encourages her to create two more.

These are one-of-a-kind washable wearable art piece.  They are as pretty on the wall as on you.  Finished size is 42” x 42” square (108 cm square)

A product of the “Artist Empowerment Project” of Aurora Silk, a Fair Trade, 100% Natural and truly eco micro-business based in Portland Oregon, created and run by Cheryl Kolander, Senior Master Natural Dyer.

Care: hand wash.  Iron when almost dry for a smooth finish, otherwise, tumble dry on low heat.

Note: colours on your monitor may not accurately represent the vibrant, yet soft true colours of these scarves.
