Durable hemp.  The herringbone weave makes a thick, yet flexible fabric suitable for upholstery, jackets, coat, pants and skirts.  It is used by many clothing manufacturers in the United States, Canada and Europe, and may be labeled “made in…”, but it is all from the same source, a joint venture by Americans in a small production mill in Romania.

Organically grown by traditional methods, this hemp is grown from seed raised for centuries in this location.  It is cut, field retted, and processed with old (literally antique) equipment that employs a maximum of the people of their farming community.

The weaving is done on fairly modern soviet provided power looms.  The weave is very traditional, interpreted to produce a balanced weave fabric.  Most important is that the warp and weft are the same top quality yarn, with an excellent fibre length  (1.5 inch average).  Very durable.

Note there is an obverse and reverse:  On one side the twill is very pronounced, while on the reverse it is more subtle, and almost looks like a plain weave.

My favorite use for this fabric is a one yard piece, which is actually a long rectangle, since the fabric is so wide.  It’s hemmed, washed, but never ironed, and I use it for a wrap around skirt/sarong/towel for beachwear.  Remember hemp is the one fibre that is not damaged by salt water! and it is very absorbent, excellent for use as towels.
