Light and Bright Tussah

Semi sheer and exceptionally shiney, this particular tussah fabric is woven from reeled tussah, which is very rare. Being Tussah, which is a wild silk, it is remarkably strong, tough and durable for such a light weight fabric. Being reeled it is luminescently sheeny as only reeled, filament silk can be.

The "Black Ice" effect when this colour-fabric is hard-press ironed reminds me of the old real "Patent Leather", which was real leather, dyed blackest black, then buff-polished and coated with a secret shellac. - Cheryl

Woven on antique looms in a small mill in India. Never perfectly regular, the variations in weave give a distinct hand-woven look to this unique fabric.

Naturally dyed in our partner dyeworks in India. Fully certified and with highest standards for worker's pay and benefits.

The dye used is Myrobalans, the husk of the fruit of the Tropical Almond, plus iron water made from rusty scrap iron fermented in locally produced raw sugar water.

Fabric Information

  • Fibre content: 100% tussah, wild silk. Reeled filament, very rare for tussah. (Reeled, so not "Peace" silk). Wildcrafted or semi cultivated, and "Organic".
  • Source: India
  • Width: 43" Dyed after weaving, so fully pre-shrunk.
  • Weight per linear yard: 1 oz
  • Commonly used for: Dresses, skirts, blouses, scarves, lingerie, semi sheer window coverings, dancing drapes, and men's shirts for evening wear.
  • Recommended care: Machine wash: gentle cycle, warm water, mild soap. Tumble dry on low heat.
  • For smoothest finish, iron from barely damp state on "wrong" side of fabric. (Fabric is same both sides, so just pick a side.) Ironing can give a super-shine, so you can get a "black ice" look by using the ironed side as the "right" side.
  • Also looks really nice unironed, as the slight crinkles give nuances of shades to the colour
