Muga silks

The photo shows this spun Muga to the upper right, and the "Golden Wild silk" to the lower left

Muga is a special type of wild silk that comes from a small area in India. The villagers in this forested region gather the cocoons in the wild and then semi-cultivate more cocoons from the eggs of the moths that emerge. It is an exceptional and labour intensive process to obtain this exquisite golden fiber. It is thought by some that this golden muga silk is the fabled "yellow silk" that, in China, only the emperor was allowed to wear.  The Muga colour is a natural honey toned golden beige.

This Muga fabric is very unusual in that it uses spun fibre from peace cocoons (where the moths have been allowed to emerge naturally). Authenticity has been attested to by a government textile inspector, (as well as my own knowledge of the various wild silks). Also unusual in that it is very finely spun and woven to make a light weight, very regular fabric. In India it is used for men's shirts that are very comfortable even in ultra hot, sticky weather.
