Lustrous and Shiny Silks

  swirl jacquard satin silk

Categories: Satins; Veil silks; Ahimsa, and other Peace and Wild silks

Satins

"Swirl" patterned Jacquard Satin NEW!
A lovely mid weight satin with woven-in pattern of swirls.

Charmeuse Satin
Charmeuse, 100% silk satin, is a lustrous satin on one side and matte crepe on the other. It is a standard of the silk garment fashion world. Aurora Silk offers this weave in three weights: light 12.5 mm from China, medium 16 mm from India, and medium heavy 19 mm from China. Flowing and drapey, uses range from lingerie to bridal gowns.

Satin Crepe
Shiny satin on one side, matte crepe on the other. Very similar to Charmeuse, and extra wide.

Crepe de Chine
A substantial crepe with a sparkly surface, 16.5 mm, both warp and weft are reeled, cultivated silk. Warp is lightly twisted, while weft is very tightly overtwisted, which causes the fabric to crepe. Extra wide.

Cleopatra Crepe
A medium weight crinkle-crepe, with lots of body and a superb drape. Crinkles up like "Cleopatra gowns", thus the name.

VEIL SILKS:

"Bridal Veil"
The gauze ground of this exceptionally pretty fabric is true raw silk. Holding it together is the spaced weft shots of bright and shiny white rayon bouclé.

Dupioni Organza - NEW!
A wonderful sheer off-white veil that is a beautiful use of reeled tussah (wild) silk. Stiff because the silk gum is left on - which means this is a truely "raw" silk. Wonderfully transparent and light, it makes an enhancing accent to any piece.

"Illusion" Gauze - NEW!
Truely transparent crinkle gauze. Used for veils and floaty dancing drapes.

RARE LUSTEROUS WILD SILK:

Fabrics

These exceptional fabrics are ALL natural 100% silk. (Only the "Bridal Veil" has accent lines of a light and bright rayon.)

For silks that are not shiney, so called "MATTES", please see Matte, PEACE and Wild Silks.

For NATURALLY DYED colours on these silks, please see ABOUT NATURALLY DYED COLOURS ON FABRICS and the individual fabric pages.

Light and Bright Tussah
This particular tussah fabric is exceptionally shiny because it is woven from reeled tussah, which is very rare. It is surprisingly durable for such a light weight tussah. NOTE: we have this in many naturally dyed colours as well.

Lustrous Peace and AHIMSA (TM) Silks

Ahimsa Smooth Spun Silk
This LIGHT WEIGHT fabric's warp and weft are both smooth spun Ahimsa™ Peace silk. "AHIMSA" TM silk is cultivated Bombyx mori, Mulberry silk, whose silkworm creators have been allowed to complete their life cycle, that is, to freely emerge from the cocoon, mate, lay eggs and die happy. We are very proud to be the long time promoter of Peace silk and to be the exclusive Western distributor of this exceptional quality of silk. Raised, spun and woven in rural India.

Ahimsa Pebble Weave
This fabric has been designed to act like a knit, very strong and durable, perfect for designers' most drapey creations!

Ahimsa 3-ply
Exactly twice as thick as the regular smooth spun Ahimsa, the durability, luster and softness of this fabric is perfect for everything and a favorite of designers. Very tightly woven, the closest fabric we carry to a "Taffeta".

Eri Peace Silk

Almost identical to the smooth woven Ahimsa, just a little "wilder" in feel, because the ERI silkmoth is, technically a wild silk. However, this Eri is now cultivated in India, on small family farm scale as an income supplement. Raised, spun and woven in village India.

Golden Wild Silk, also called "MUGA"
Wild-crafted AND SEMI-CULTIVATED, from wild silkworms in India. The natural shimmery golden beige colour of this rare and exotic silk needs no dye to enhance its exquisite beauty. This is one of the RAREST wild silks in the world. Hand spun and handwoven in only a small area of rural North East India.

Spun Silk
This is a light weight and very smooth spun silk fabric. Durable and soft. About half the fibre in this spun silk are breeder cocoons, thus the fabric is approximately 50% "Peace" silk. The most economical lining silk, it feels very good against the skin.
