The Logwood Project

Proyecto Palo de Campeche,
La Republica Dominicana

I went looking for the sun,
I found Logwood.
I went looking for the Logwood,
I found a people.
I went looking for a true heart,
I found true work.

The Logwood Project has been in operation for three years. At first simply an effort to bring in Logwood dyewood for the needs of my Aurora Silk natural dye studio, it has evolved into an Indigenous support and economic development project with a much larger vision.

The community can now supply both Logwood and Fustic wood dyes. Madder is being grown, and local dye sources are being explored. The raising of Peace Silk has begun. Natural medicines and tonics are being made with local plants. A local woman hand-crochets Therapeutic Wrist and Foot Warmers from Tussah silk.

Benefits to the Indigenous community include a bridge for safe access, a water line so there is drinkable water in the community, a lending library of books in Spanish and English, a clinic cottage where natural medicines can be dispensed, and donations of art supplies, school supplies, and musical instruments.

This is a project of Mama D.O.C., a non-profit working to promote natural dyes and natural health. More information on the Logwood Project, Mama D.O.C., and how you can help is available from their website.

Cheryl is available to give lectures and slide presentations on the Quesqueya people, Logwood, and natural dyeing.
