“Osage Orange” is an American relative of the Mulberry. It’s wood is yellow like Fustic wood, and is an equally good dye. The strength is less, so expect to use about twice what is called for with Fusticwood. An All American product, wildcrafted in the mid-western and southern states where it is abundant in woodlots and forests.
“Shavings (planings) make for the best extraction: thin enough to extract in 4 to five 20 minute boilings, yet in large enough pieces that the wood won’t pass thru a fine sieve.”
Dyeing with the wood shavings yields much brighter and clearer colours than using an extract. Other options for bright clear yellows are weld for silk and wool, and fustic wood for silk, cotton, and wool.
