Cochineal is the natural dye from a scale insect that lives its sedentary life on the Opuntia prickly-pear cactus. It is the brilliant red of the British Redcoats, and the Scarlet of Cardinals' Robes. Wars were fought over this dye when it was discovered in the New World. Very strong, very precious.
