Natural Dye & Mordant Colour Chart

BOOK! Cheryl's fabulous and unique Natural Dye book gives lots of hints for getting the very best colours from the red roots of Madder, and the techniques also apply to this Mungeet: "Brilliant Colours with Natural Dyes"

For the advanced dyer, the chapter on Madder and Mungeet in Gardner's more technical book is a must-read: "Excerpts from Gardner" on Natural Dyes.

Mungeet is a madder variety that grows wild in India.  It is Rubia cordifolia, while regular madder used most often in Europe and America is Rubia tinctoria.  Note that the name "Mungeet" is also transliterated Mungeesta, Mungith, moongeet, etc.

"The colours obtained from Mungeet are as rich and as red as any with the "Tinctoria" madder.  I prefer the reds with Mungeet on a tin mordant.   The exhaust colours with either a tin or alum mordant are lovely clear salmons." - Cheryl

The brilliant and clear “Turkey red” cotton we have dyed at a partner dyeworks in India is created with this root.  On wool the colour can easily be this clear: think of antique Persian carpets! On silk the colours are more orangey, altho the colour with tin mordant is an exquisite coral. On cotton, soft reds with alum and oranges with tin are straight forward and easy.  With an after mordant of iron, these turn to rich maroons. As with regular madder, expect to use from 50 to 200% by weight of dyestuff to fibre, depending on depth of colour desired. For instance, it takes lots of dye, easily 200%, and many extra steps to get the clear classic Turkey Red on cotton, but a very simple alum mordant with 50% mungeet gives a luminous coral.

Additional Product Information

"This is the best quality madder I have seen in over 10 years. It gives the best, most permanent reds with alum, and clear bright oranges with tin." – Cheryl Kolander, our Master Natural Dyer

Mungeet and Madder are very closely related but are not the same. For fermentation of the indigo natural dye vat, Madder is preferred, as Mungeet does not ferment in the same way.
