This is the most fragrant of all the dyes I’ve ever boiled. “Of course!” I finally figured out: it’s sandalwood! One of the most sought after of fragrant woods for incense. - Cheryl
Colours obtained are various shades of Bronze, soft golden apricot and peachy tones.
This is the finely ground bark of the tree. As far as I have been able to learn, this is a recycle product, being salvage from the primary use of the trees for their beautiful and fragrant wood. Also, the species is not the rare Sandalwood of the Pacific Islands, but is a common tree in the area of India where it is harvested.
Tests show that Ratanjali delivers nice Bronzes at 50% to 200% by weight of fibre (lower figure for wools and lighter shades, higher figure for silks, cottons and darker shades). Best colours are on an Alum base. Can be darkened with an after-mordant of Iron.

Red Sandalwood is an excellent incense! Sprinkle on coals for dry incense, or boil in water (as to extract the dye) for a moist incense. Sandalwood scent is traditionally used in aroma therapy, where it is considered to brighten the mind, while calming the nerves of the body.
