Mordants and Assists

Copper = Copper Sulphate

Copper mordant

Called “Blue Vitriol” in old dye books.  Copper can be used as either a pre-mordant, at ½ ounce per pound fabric (3%), or as an after-mordant modifier, where you leave it to soak and take it out when the colour has changed “to taste”.

Copper pollution is a serious problem in many watersheds because of the horrible practice of dumping it by the 50 pound bags into lakes and estuaries to kill water plants and algae.  Chesapeake Bay oysters, for instance, have beautiful blue shells because of this excess of copper in the water.

Please use copper responsibly: do not dump your mordant bath, but re-use it according to the general formula of add only ¾ the usual amount, (assume ¼ of what was added for the last mordanting is still there).

“Most people are deficient in copper, which is a trace mineral needed by the body.  Lack of copper leads to arthritis, and that is why many people feel better in their wrists by wearing copper bracelets until the copper oxidizes and leaves a green ring on the skin.  From there it goes to the joints of the wrist and many people get relief thereby.”  - Cheryl

Always wear dishwshing gloves when handling mordants, and keep out of reach of children.
