Naturally Dyed Rayon Crepe
Rayon is a reconstituted cellulose fibre designed to be as like silk
as possible. In fact it was originally sold (and still is) as "Art
silk" meaning "Artificial silk". There are many different manufacturing
processes and many different sources of the basic cellulose.
The finest rayon is made from cotton waste, and this makes it environmentally
friendly, as a recycled product. Basically the cellulose is digested
in an alkali solution, then is extruded from spinnerets, in imitation
of the silk worms spinning process. So it is not an artificial fibre,
like nylon, which is made from petroleum. However, rayons differ,
and as my Guru friend says, you just have to try it out and see how
it feels for you. |
| This rayon is a really nice rayon crepe from India. I
dyed several lengths with Indigo and took with me to the Dominican
Republic, which is a tropical Caribbean Island. I found it actually
preferable to silk in that climate, which is 90 degrees Fahrenheit
and 100% humidity. Silk is so good at conserving the body's energy,
that it can actually be too hot in a hot climate. Rayon, like cotton,
tends to dissipate heat, so it was actually more comfortable. The Indigo
dye and the blue colour are both insect repellents, so the scarf doubled
as mosquito netting — a use that we Americans need to consider
now that West Nile Virus is a summertime threat.
And, although rayon has at somewhat glass-like feel, this fabric
absorbed sweat in the 100% humidity as well as silk or cotton.
I offer this fabric in Naturally Dyed dark "Peace Blue". It is
hand dyed by me, with Natural Indigo, processed by Natural Fermentation
in the old way. The dye work is marvelously irregular, with swirls
and sunbursts and streaks and "bubbles" of stars on this midnite
blue ground.
The cuts are 3 yards, after dyeing. |

Our rayon crepe is sold out so we are dying our “Bridal
veil” rayon stripe instead. |

PROTECTION AGAINST MOSQUITO BITES is of great importance now that West Nile Virus is here.
Aurora Silk's Indigo dyed, village woven Indian Rayon makes the best mosquito net, because the Indigo smell, and sky like colour also deter all flying menaces.
West Nile virus is now a threat to the health of all in the United States, as well as all countries to the south. It is transmitted by a mosquito bite. Protection against mosquito bites has become of life-or-death importance.
In tropical countries, mosquito netting is used over every bed. Malaria has always been a life threatening potential effect of a mosquito bite. In the northern countries mosquitoes have never been that much of a problem. But now they are.
Please protect yourself and your loved ones. A tent made from this Indigo dyed rayon cloth will screen out flying insects. The Indigo odor also repels insects and masks the scent of warm blood. The sky like blue of the cloth confounds them into reacting as if it is the sky, so they turn away rather than try to fly into it.
