“Tussah” is wild silk, usually
gathered in the jungle from cocoons of wild silkmoths. Wild
silk can be considered “Organic”, as
almost all wild silk is wildcrafted. The fibre is sturdier,
tho not as soft as cultivated silk. This particular
fabric is exceptionally shiny because it is woven from reeled
tussah, which is very rare.
The natural beige, unwashed fabric is stiff. This gives
it uses that no other silk fabric can match. It can
be stretched and used as dye-paint canvas. It can be
folded into Origami. It can be sewn into light weight
garments that stand out from the body. Being Tussah
silk, it is surprisingly durable for such a light weight.
Once washed, it softens and continues to soften with wear.
This fabric is woven on antique looms in a small mill in India. It
is not perfectly regular. Please consider these irregularities
as part of the process of handwork.
CARE: Hand or machine wash using “gentle” cycle,
lukewarm water and mild liquid detergent like Ivory or Crystal
White (suitable for handwashing dishes). Rinse well
and add vineger to the last rinse if your water is hard. Air
dry in shade or tumble dry on low heat. Do not over
dry. For an extra sheen, iron dry from the almost dry -
barely damp state, using a medium iron setting.
ALWAYS PRE SHRINK FABRIC before
cutting to sew, by washing it first.
Warp ways shrinkage, about 3%, weft ways
shrinkage about 4%
Sample is unwashed, for the hand of washed fabric,
