Article: Tips For Handling Super Fine Silk Thread

WORK SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY

Tie an inch of a fine contrasting colour yarn to the other end - the one you are not reeling from - so you can find it later.

Unreel slowly onto a cone of tube, by hand, working close to the swift and watching for signs of "catches".  Tease out any catches.  There are occasional slubs in this yarn which can be teased out also.

Be sure the skein is positioned on the swift so the thread unreels from the top side (outside) of the skein.

If the end breaks, try to find it visually.  The skein is wound criss-cross, so it is often possible to find the end by following the top-lying thread.

Use the marked other end, if you can't find the break.  Remember to turn the skein over on the swift, so the thread reels from the topside (outside) and does not have to be pulled out from the inside of the skein.

Use the lightest weight, easiest turning swift possible.  If wood, you may also want to cover it with cloth so the yarn can't catch on wooden parts.

Wind bobbins by hand while watching TV, talking on phone, etc., so you don't get impatient with how long it takes!

If your hands are too rough, wear those thin surgical gloves.

Smile!  It'll be worth it in the end.
