Called raw silk in the fashion trade, the true designation of this fabric is NOIL SILK. It is a very versatile silk, spun thick and nubbly like cotton, with a matte surface and drapey hand.
Noil silk is a very durable fabric that I use for all purposes including dresses, men’s shirts, lightweight pants, pillows and sheets and children’s clothes. It is especially desirable for "sport" clothes and informal wear, because, while it has all the health promoting properties of silk, it does not look "silky," which look is usually reserved for evening and bedroom wear.
The source of fibre for regular noil fabric is conventionally raised silkworms. After the outer floss and the reelable filament have been taken from the cocoon, what is left is the inner, soft and rather weaker fibres that surround the actual chrysalis. These are salvaged, separated from the chrysalis, carded and spun like cotton. So conventional Noil or "Raw Silk" is fibre from the closest to the killed crysalids.
It is the colour which is most remarkable: a dark fawn to medium brown, with speckles or "noils" of both light and dark wild silks. These are all natural shades of a rare wild silk moth native only to one area of India.
