Article: Therapeutic Properties of Naturally Dyed Silk

Much more than just pretty colours, Naturally Dyed silks have proven therapeutic value. These fabrics bring healthy, healing energy where they are worn on the body.

What you put on the outside, ends up inside.

Your skin is the largest, most absorptive organ of your body. Chemical dyes, made from petroleum, are major poisons. They have been in use for 146 years.

Natural Dyes are extracts from therapeutic plants (madder, indigo, brazilwood, logwood, fustic, catechu/cutch), insects (cochineal), and minerals needed by the body in trace amounts (iron, tin, alum). These dyes have been in use for at least 10,000 years.

Twenty five years of clinical research has established the following recommended uses:

  • For cold extremities, arthritis, diabetes, or any condition of impaired circulation: Warm colours, such as gold, golden brown, salmon, orange, coral, or rust
  • For hot extremities (sweaty, smelly, or itchy feet), or overexcited nerves (as manifested in tics, shaking, epilepsy, or headaches): Cooling colours, such as Indigo blue, blue green, blue purple, silver or grey; or try lavender grey or light purple. colours dyed with Natural Vat Indigo carry Indigo's botanical benefits to help alleviate itching, and its homeopathic benefits to help calm nerves.
  • For the immune system: When taken as herbs, the natural dyestuffs fustic (golds and most greens) and catechu/cutch (browns) have value as immune stimulators. Wearing silk dyed with these plants will assist immune-stimulating therapies.
  • To promote spiritual development, relaxation: Lavenders, purples, light Indigos
  • To promote love, compassion: Light pinks, rose tones, and corals
  • To promote grounding (such as a focus on the here-and-now or material development): Browns, dark golds, soft greens, mossy golden greens, dark grey, and black

Your Naturally Dyed silks are precious treasures. Care for them with love, and in return they will assist you in your good health. We now offer "Therapeutic Gold"!

A no-mordant colour, meaning no metal salt is used to fix the colour. This makes it an excellent first colour for people with extreme chemical sensitivities. The dye itself, Fustic, is a natural herbal immune stimulant, and the colour itself is a mood brightener!

Hand dyed in small lots. The colour is generally very even. The rich gold will lighten as it ages, then stabilizes at a soft warm yellow.
