(Various spellings), pronounced: Ah – brah – soft g as in George, accent on the "brajz".
The term is French, and has been used in the Oriental carpet trade for centuries, to denote the subtle effects of dye lot variations. Hand work in small lots will always give dye lot variations. With the exquisite hues possible with Natural Dyes, this variation is considered an asset to the artistry of the piece.
Variegation is a change of hue (colour) or shade (depth) within one dyelot. Both variation and variegation are now denoted by the term abrajz.
"ABRAJZ is King" – Nicholas Walker, of Caravan Carpets, modern renditions of traditional designs in all Natural Dye colours. "Abrajz tells us the yarns are hand dyed in small lots."
In the case of fabrics, this variegation gives a luminosity to the colour, as if light is playing games and dazzling our eyes. It is a true delight to the senses.
For the "modern", so used to industrial evenness, it may take some adjustment to see "unevenness" as the joyful expression it is.
Your colours are an exquisite example of this art form.
