Article: Eggs & Strains

cocoons

Here you can see the golden cocoons and a white one

Aurora Silk's strain of eggs has been raised in America raised since the mid-1980s. It has been unselected during that time.

I am now selecting for the following characteristics:

· quantity of silk produced

· white vs. striped caterpillars

· white vs. golden-gummed cocoons. (The colour is in the gum — the silk processes to pure white.)

This strain is preferable for the moth emergence that is an integral part of Peace Silk production.

Highly bred strains from Japan may produce more silk per caterpillar, but the cocoons are so dense that the moth cannot escape. For a "Peace" silk project, the strain we are developing is the best.
